This Week in Movies – 5/11/09

picture-11

In Theaters:

  • Angels & Demons – Tom Hanks in the sequel to The DaVinci Code, which is based on the book that came out before The DaVinci Code. Confused? Better call Tom Hanks. At least he cut his hair this time. I’m skipping it, but if you liked the first one, you probably already have tickets to this one.

  • The Brothers Bloom (Limited) – Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel Weisz in a con movie directed by the guy that did Brick. If this movie is even half as good as Brick, I’m getting in line now.

Favorite Video Friday – Crazy-Cool Camera Tricks III

This week: Even more camera tricks.

The Ting Tings – We Walk

The Ting Tings have been featured in every Camera Trick installment I’ve ever done. I really dig their style.

Flight of the Conchords – Carol Brown (Choir of Ex-Girlfriends)

No installment of Crazy-Cool Camera Tricks would be complete without the king of cool camera tricks, Michel Gondry. I gotta get me one of them video switcher guitars.

NSM PSM – Clap Your Brains Off

This video was featured in the March issue of Amercan Cinematographer and for good reason. Director Frank Beltran shot the entire video on a Canon D1-EOS Mark III with a EF 16-35mm lens at 10 fps in JPEG format. He then used some fancy plugins to recreate M.C. Escher’s famous “Droste Effect.” When I grow up, I want to be as creative as this guy.

This Week in Movies – 5/4/09

You've got red on you

In Theaters:

  • Star Trek – Origin story directed by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, MI:3). Sylar is Spock, Shaun of the Dead is Scotty, Harold is Sulu, and some pretty boy is Captain Kirk. Even if you don’t like Star Trek, J.J. knows how to make an entertaining movie.

  • Next Day Air –  I have never heard of this movie, but after watching the trailer, it may be worth a rent at the very least. Turk and Mos Def are delivery guys. Turk delivers a package of cocaine mistakenly to Mike Epps and Avon Barksdale. Here come the shenanigans.

Video of Note that Came Out Since the Last Time I did One of These:

  • The Wrestler – Mickey Rourke is a washed up wrestler risking everything on a comeback. Marisa Tomei is his stripper love interest. Supposed to be good. Nominated for Oscars and all that.

  • Frost/Nixon – Another Oscar contender. This one about the reporter who interviewed Nixon post impeachment.

  • Yes Man – Jim Carrey can’t say no. They say he’s back to Liar Liar form in this one.

  • The Day the Earth Stood Still – Keanu Reeves is an emotionless alien. He also plays one in this movie . . . I’m here all night folks! Seriously though, I thought this one was worth a rent at least.

  • Doubt – Lots of Oscar attention for the actors in this one. Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are nuns and a priest respectively. Scandal ensues.

  • Slumdog Millionaire – I don’t know if it deserved the Oscar or all the hype and fanfare from Hollywood, but it’s definitely worth a watch.

  • Seven Pounds – Will Smith is on a personal mission. Any more will spoil it for you. I liked it, but a lot of people didn’t. Some say it was too manipulative and sappy. I disagree, but it did have its faults.

Favorite Video Friday – Moving Tableaux

I’ve been meaning to post this one for a long time, but I was waiting for the third video to come out. These videos always come in threes. I don’t know why, but without fail, whenever I find 2 videos with similar styles, a third one will always follow. It took a month or so for this one to show itself.

This Week: The Moving Tableaux

Adele – Chasing Pavements

I love Adele and the morbid beauty of this video. A perfect match.

Thunderheist – Nothing2Step2

This was that elusive 3rd video. Not as good as the other 2, but still pretty damn cool.

Oren Lavie – Her Morning Elegance

Thanks to Yancy for sharing this one. At least I think it was him. I’ve had many of these types of mornings since then.

This Week in Movies – 3/23/09

In Theaters:

  • Monsters vs. Aliens – Despite not being Pixar, this one looks decent. I suggest watching it in 3D.

  • The Haunting in Connecticut – Why did Connecticut get haunted? Cause there’s too many damn uppity white people, that’s why. My sister used to live in Connecticut, so that should tell you something. Maybe this movie is about her time there. I don’t know. All I know is if you watch this movie, then Connecticut wins.

  • 12 Rounds – If you’ve got money to waste, I say why not go watch some wrestler try to act. Personally, I’d rather roll my money up into little balls and bounce it off the wall for 2 hours. It’s Suze Orman approved.

On Video:

  • Quantum of Solace – The latest in the shaky-cam era of Bond movies. In this one, Bond puts on eyeliner and whines about his parents for 2 hours. I still need to see it.

  • Bolt – A superstar cartoon dog doesn’t know he’s a regular dog … or is he? Will he find his super powers hidden deep within himself? Will this movie follow every feel good misguided hero cliche in the book? Will kids care? I don’t know. I haven’t seen it. It’s probably worth a watch.
